Hope II (Oil, gold and platinum on canvas -
110.5 x 110.5 cm) by Gustav Klimt
Hope II (detail)
Gustav Klimt (1862–1918) was an Austrian
painter. He worked in Vienna which was also home to Sigmund Freud. The
topic is complex with the pregnant woman, the skull, and three women at her
feet.
Klimt’s technique combines tradition (Byzantine
gold leaf painting) and modernism with very ornate organic patterns and a rich
palette.
