Sorolla and the Paris Years Exhibition – Part 1

After the bath - Oil on canvas by Joaquín Sorolla

The Spanish painter Joaquín Sorolla was born in Valencia, Spain on 27 February 1863 and died in Madrid on 10 August 1923.

The way he used light and his practice of plein-air painting explain his affiliation to the Impressionists painters. His style, colours and boldness of brushwork are similar to those of John Singer Sargent.

Joaquín Sorolla exhibited his work at the galerie Georges Petit in Paris (an impressionist gallery) in 1906.

The exhibition “Sorolla and the Paris Years” at the Musée des impressionnismes Giverny features about 100 paintings, ranging from 50 small oil sketches to large works. His favourite subjects were beach scenes, landscapes, scenes from everyday life and portraits.
