This is a series of posts on the “Pissarro in harbours” exhibition that runs until 29 September 2013 at the Musée d’Art Moderne André Malraux (MuMa) – Le Havre, France. In the previous posts, we looked at works done in Le Havre and Rouen. It’s time to look at Dieppe.
Pissarro stayed in Dieppe in 1901 and 1902.
For his first stay, in 1901, Pissarro was in the historical centre, lodging in the Hôtel du Commerce. He later rented a room at 7, Arcades de la Poissonnerie. From there he could see the Duquesne harbour.

DIEPPE, AUGUST 11, 1902
My dear Lucien,
I am working hard and for good reason, deals are tough, as the peasants say. Last year the Bernheims wrote me many pressing and friendly letters, this year not a word.
My motifs are very beautiful: the fishmarket, the inner harbor, the Duquesne basin, in the rain, in the sun, in the smoke, etc. (Letters to his son Lucien – Camille Pissarro)
